Description of the Location Map
The map shows that the location
of the apartment is very good, being only a few minutes apartment walk from
the Rambla. The apartment is marked on the map by the red circle
to the left of the Rambla.
There are various places of interest nearby in easy walking
distance, such as the Cathedral, Plaza Real, Rambla, Boqueria
market, old city wall, Liceu theatre, Rambla Raval, historic
Library of Catalunya, Maritime Museum, Maremagnum centre with
its discos, the marina, many more museums/exhibitions, lots
of shops !, numerous cafes/bars/nightclubs, local music venue
with music every night etc etc.
The 'Cuitat Vella' (old city) centre of Barcelona is fairly
compact and it is easy to walk around.
The very popular water fountains show at Plaza Espanya is 15
minutes walk away or 3 metro stops. The popular Picasso museum/exhibition
can be reached by bus or metro or a 15 minute walk. And the
Sagrada Familia is 5 stops away on the metro, no changes, taking
Line 2 from the very close St. Antoni station.
There
is also the advantage of a bus to the beach at Barceloneta
every 6 to 10 minutes during the week, slightly less frequent
at weekends. Or the metro goes to the beach as well.

More Photos and Information about the location
The
apartment is in a good location being in the Cuitat Vella ('the old city') area of Barcelona only 4 minutes walk from the Rambla.
The apartment is very close to the well known
attractions in the centre of the city such as the Cathedral, Plaza
Real, the Rambla, Plaza Jaime, Teatro Liceu, La Boqueria etc etc.
The apartment has the advantage of being in a quiet location above a road with essentially no
traffic while being a quick walk from the tourist attractions in the centre of the city.

Terrace cafes/bars
Close to the apartment are some good terrace cafes/bars which are a lovely
place to relax and perhaps look at guide books to plan where to go.
Also a lovely place to sit and chat in the summer evenings and nights.
One nearby
terrace cafe/restuarant
with many tables outside and sun
most of the day has a 3 course menu for 7.5 Euros with
beer/wine/water/bread which is very enjoyable !.
There is a wide variety of cafes and bars from basic bars,
chic/stylish, sofa bars, Morrocan normal cafe/bars,
Pakistani/Indian, latin style/music, original/antique, dissused
furniture style !, serving hatch style ! (if it rains you need an
umbrella !!), student style and many terrace bars/cafes/restuarants.
The 1st photo shows the nearby Rambla Raval.
There you will find lots of cafe terraces for a morning coffee or for eating
outside in the evening.
The 2nd photo shows a nearby cafe/bar terrace.
The 3rd photo shows a lovely square a few minutes walk from the apartment,
it has a fenced off area for children to play, two cafes and is an
especially nice place on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
The 4th photo shows
the popular nearby local cafe/bar/restuarant with the 7.5 Euros menu.

Bus or Metro to the
Beach
There's a handy bus to the beach at Barceloneta, (number 64, on Ronda Sant Antoni), every 6-10 minutes on
Monday to Friday, slightly less frequent on weekends; the last stop is near this sculpture. Taking the Metro
is another option, it's only 5 stops to the beach at Cuidad Olympica, 1
easy change. |

Dynamic Area
The neighbourhood has been going through a dynamic phase with new
bars/cafes/restuarants/shops etc opening. The nearby Rambla Raval was
only finished in approx 2000, and previously the art centre MACBA opened in approx. 1990 and this has helped to open up the
Raval district and make it more open etc and this has gradually brought more tourists and locals into
to the area which helps open more cafes/bars/galleries/restaurants etc.
In the last few years the area has been a nice mix of
local people, students and relatively small numbers of tourists etc. However as more and more hostels and hotels open in the area the number of tourists
is increasing every year (and also 10% more tourists arrive in Barcelona every, year on year !) and as the numbers of tourists increases
it will slowly lose its 'local' character (separated from the tourist crowds on Ramblas and more relaxed) to become a tourist dominated area......so don't leave your visit too late !.

Great Variety
The neighbourhood has an amazing mix of different 'things'. From candle
making shop, a street selling mostly second hand clothes, the 600 year old stone
library of Catalunya, a bar selling Absenta (latin for 'to forget' ! )
( a great bar I think), the even older maritime centre ( Museo Maritim)
(Catalunya was a major naval power around 1300/1400 with control of
distant places in the Mediterrean), ancient churches, largest remaining
part of the city wall..........
This photo is from the public gardens of the Library of Catalunya,
dating from 1401, which is close to the apartment.

The Boqueria Market
The excellent Boqueria market with an amazing selection of fresh
fish/shells/shrimps, meat and with fruit from all over the planet. And
much of it at excellent prices as long as you avoid the stalls by the
entrance where many tourists pay 3 times the price inside the market !
The Boqueria is also an excellent place to have a coffee or meal at one
of the many places inside the market, all the food of course being
super fresh; very nice atmosphere with all the life of the market. The
market is only 3 minutes walk from the apartment.

Nearby Live Music Venues
There are various live music venues a short walk from the apartment such as London Bar,
Harlem Jazz Club, Quiet Man etc etc
A music venue
not far from the apartment
has live music every night, it's a good place to go, and for anyone
that wants to see some flamenco this is on 1 night a week. Monday night
is jazz, Tuesday rock/blues, Wednesday jazz, Thursday Cuban music,
Friday is flamenco, Saturday rock/blues, Sunday rock/blues jam session.
Fri/Sat is normally 6 Euros admission but includes a beer.
|
Music Venue a few minutes walk away.
|
Nightclubs
The famous La Paloma ('The Pidgeon') nightclub/dancehall/music venue is in a converted old theatre and
is only a short walk from the apartment.
It is a lovely building inside, in Victorian (or Spanish
equivalent !) type style and has been used in many advertising
campaigns such as for the main beer in Catalunya, Estrella Damm, (Moulin
Rouge style advert). On many nights there is old fashioned couples dancing to a live band from approx. 21.00 to 01.00 (this is very popular).
The atmosphere and clientel then change as it becomes a nightclub from approx 01.00/02.00 to 05.00/06.00.
There are many other nightclubs close by, such as City Hall, Sala Apolo,
Plaza Real discos and MareMagnum
has many discos, free entrance, about 15 minutes walk away at the bottom of the Rambla. |

Metros/buses/trains.
Some of the popular tourist attractions are outside of the Cuitat Vella area and
you will need to use some transport to get there.
The apartment is very well located for taking advantage of the buses, trains
and the excellent Metro system. All of these have connections only a short walk from
the apartment making it very easy to quickly (and cheaply ) get to different parts of the city or
to easily make day trips out of the city.
The apartment is close to the metro lines 2, 3 and 1; 3, 4 and 6 minutes level
walk away respectively. Line 2 will take you across the city (and take you to Gaudi's
Sagrada Familia, on visit list of many people ). And line 3
will take you to the Montjuic park (line 2 with the Funicular also does, eg. to
Montjuic Castle) and its numerous museums/exhibitions, olympic swimming
pool facilities etc.
The excellent water fountains display to music is very popular and is only 3 metro stops away on this side of
the Montjuic park. The popular Paseo de Gracia with its shops, Gaudi
buildings, Pedrera art exhibitions, Egyption Museum etc, cafes, can be
reached on line 2 or line 3, 2 stops. Line 3 will take you up to near
park Guell or in the other direction out to the Barcelona Camp Nou
football stadium.
For longer distance transport the local and medium/long distance trains
stop at Paseo de Gracia (2 stops on metro, line 2) or Plaza Catalunya
(10 minute walk) (day trip ski train stops here, 38 Euros
including ski pass !, yes, "including" ! ) .
The photos show the water fountains by Plaza Espanya, the Batllo building in Paseo de Gracia,
the lizard in Parc Güell, some of the Olympic facilities on Montjuic, the MACBA contemporary art centre and the last photo shows
the CCCB
(Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona), which is the place in Barcelona for independant and student video/film festivals, also dance, etc etc.
The large MACBA
building has a number of contemporary art exhibitions.
CCCB is bigger than its facade to the street and has various facilities including underground cinema theatres.
(MACBA and CCCB are only a short walk from the apartment). CCCB is the main place in Barcelona for events relating to video and film for independant and student producers and has a lot of events
such as short film festival, independant video festival, open air cinema in summer etc etc. Has other festivals as well such as dance.
